Changes at Columbia State

Changes at Columbia State

Columbia State is a wonderful community college. I have taken a lot of my college classes through this college and I have had a wonderful experience. Even though I am a current student at this college, I have not taken a class on campus since 2014. With this being said, I can't think of anything that I would change in regard to the campus life of Columbia State. However, since I spend a lot of time in online classes through Columbia State, I would recommend changing the online platform to Canvas. When I attended UNA, the part that made my online classes so wonderful was the fact that they used canvas. Canvas is very user friendly and accessible. To my knowledge, Columbia State does not have an app that would allow me to check my grades, upload files, and much more simply from my phone, canvas allows this. Canvas would make it more appealing for students to want to take online classes.

Libraries

Libraries

I think Libraries are great! They offer a variety of different services all in a quiet accommodating environment. Growing up, my local library would have coloring contests, read aloud, computer time, and much more! There were tons of books, that were free to check out. Many DVDs and audiobooks were also available to be checked out. At the library, you are able to do research, read books and so much more. In today's day and age though, libraries are almost becoming obsolete.

On the internet, you have all the answers to all of your questions at your fingertips. Having trouble spelling a word? No problem. Forgot what the capital of Ohio is? Don't sweat it. Want to read a book but can't make it to the library? Google it! There are many ways to find free books, cheap books, all the books, online with the drop of a hat.

I personally know that libraries have great value, especially to those that do not have accessible internet in their homes. When I have children, I want to be able to take them to pick out a book at the library. I want them to go to a read-along at the library. Yes, the internet has tons of information, but you can't replace the feeling of being in a quiet, peaceful environment give you.

Social Media

Social Media

Social media is a huge part of today's world.  We wake up and scroll, we scroll throughout the day, we scroll on our lunch break, we scroll when we get into bed. Almost every free second throughout the day is spent on some kind of social media platform.

We have Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Tiktok, and many more! Between all of the social media platforms that are known to me, I would have to say that Facebook is the one I use the most. On Facebook, I am able to see more than just pictures. I am able to keep up with people's lives, see their family portraits, and see when they have a prayer request. I am able to receive news and so much more, all in one place.

Who Likes Hearing Bad News?

Bad News

Do you enjoy hearing or giving bad news? Of course not! Normally people do not enjoy willingly hurting someone's feelings or making them have a bad day.

There are different ways that someone could present bad news, but the most effective method would be face-to-face. When giving bad news face-to-face, you are able to empathize with the person receiving the information. You are also able to help answer any questions they may have or solve any problems that arise when you are face-to-face. If someone does not take the bad news well, you are able to give them assistance when you are there with them. If a doctor called patients and told them that they were terminally ill, the patient could have a panic attack and the doctor wouldn't be able to give any assistance to the person over the phone. When you're face-to-face, you're able to assess the situation as it as happening and change your tone accordingly.

Persuasion

Persuasion

All forms of persuasion are used on a daily bases. We use them when we want our friends to do something with us- "I went with you to this party, now will you go to the store with me?". We watch as actors use a form of persuasion to endorse products, so as consumers we see someone that we admire, using the product, and in turn, WE want to use the product.

A real-world example of persuasion would be Kylie Cosmetics. Kylie Jenner has created a cosmetic line. Kylie Jenner is beautiful, right? So wouldn't all of these young girls want to be beautiful too? By Kylie creating and endorsing this item, she is using authority persuasion. She takes her beauty and markets it to seem like to get the beauty she has, you just need to buy her product. Young women who look up to Kylie Jenner, want to look like her. In turn, they buy her product. In order to endorse an item and it be profitable, you must first make a name or title for yourself that encourages others to listen to you. If Kylie didn't wear her own cosmetics and look on fleek every time she does so, would that be a good endorsement for her business? Of course not!

Thank You

Thank You

How many of you love hearing the words "thank you" when you do something for someone? Does it make you want to do something else for them? Of course! We are a people who desire praise from one another.

In the business world, bosses, or future bosses feel the same way! Sending a thank-you note, card or email, following a job interview has proven to a profitable practice. Sixty-eight percent of hiring managers say that sending a thank you card could make the difference in whether you get the job or not.

When sending a thank-you note after a job interview, you should think of what the best practices would be. Studies show that a thank-you letter is best received within 24 hours after your interview. This way your face and the impression that you made are still fresh in their minds.

How did the company contact you regarding the job? Did you receive any emails from the company? Mailed letter? When you examine how the company best communicates, then you are able to better assess which medium to use when sending a thank-you note. If the company is very traditional and conservative, consider sending a handwritten note in with an email.
